Early exposure to music and movement unlocks both social and intellectual development in preschoolers. The Music Tree Prep School provides the expertise and fertile soil needed to grow and enhance young minds in the Early Birds Music Program for children ages 3 to 4 years old and the Baby Bird Program for children up to 2 years old.
The Fall 2018 classes will be held on Wednesday from 1:15 p.m. to 2 p.m., Baby Birds; and 2:15 to 3 p.m., Early Birds, and will be taught by Music Tree vocal instructor Nancy Hendrick who also holds certifications in preschool music education.
In research published in the early 1980s, Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner concluded that ‘music is a way of knowing.’ His work argues that music intelligence is equal in importance to logical – mathematical intelligence, linguistic intelligence, spatial intelligence, bodily – kinesthetic intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, and intrapersonal intelligence.
Hendrick incorporates both music and movement in Early Birds classes. The Early Childhood Music and Movement Association says 85 percent of brain development happens by 3 years old. As children grow, they need to learn specific activities that are important for development.
The Early Bird lessons build skill foundations crucial to emerging development. Very young children, for example, begin to scoot and crawl for movement and while these activities are part of eventually learning to walk, they are also essential for brain development. Patterned activities in preschool music classes, such as clapping to music or jumping in time to a beat stimulate brain function and help the brain to organize thoughts and behaviors.
Hendrick graduated from Manhattan School of Music where she studied voice with world renowned mezzo soprano, Mignon Dunn. While in New York, Ms. Hendrick performed the roles of Despina in Cosi fan Tutte, Oscar in Un Ballo in Maschera, Susannah in Le Nozze Di Figaro and Musetta in La Boheme. Ms. Hendrick was a first place winner in the Regional NATS competition and a Metropolitan Opera Regional Council Audition Finalist.
